Conor McGregor buys €1 million worth of medical equipment to combat coronavirus in Ireland

In conversation with Ireland's Minister of Finance, fighter confirms donation to hospitals to help treat victims of the disease

With each passing day, much of the world has come together to win the battle against the spread of the coronavirus. Thinking about helping his country at this troubled time in history, the MMA star, Conor McGregor decided to donate 1 million (around R$5,5 million) in equipment for hospitals in the Leinster region, in Ireland. The 'Notório' has expressed its support for the population and asked, on its social networks, for people to comply with requests for seclusion, with the intention of reducing contamination rates. The announcement was made after the fighter disclosed a conversation with the Irish Minister of Finance, Paschal Donohoe.

“Today I am purchasing one million euros worth of personal protective equipment to be deployed in all combat hospitals in the Leinster region,” the former UFC featherweight and lightweight champion wrote.

Last Tuesday (24), the Irishman published a video expressing his position in favor of the period of confinement and even suggesting the closure of airports in the country.

“I know a good, tough fight when I see one, and now we have one on our hands. I want to call my people: the great people of Ireland. This fight needs all of us. We are all together in the red corner and waiting for the bell. So let's get together and ring the bell ourselves – including people from the rest of the world. A real lockdown must begin, and it must begin now. A united confinement. We must close our airports. We must close all non-essential businesses. We have to cut all non-essential travel”, said the 'Notório' in a video lasting more than 2 minutes.

In addition to Conor, other MMA athletes, such as Anderson Silva, Fabricio Werdum e Jon Jones also expressed their support for confinement.

In recent weeks, Ultimate confirmed the cancellation of three events, but, according to the company's president, Dana White, the plan is to return to activities after the event. UFC 249, which remains confirmed for April 18th. The location, however, is not confirmed.
