Charles of the Bronx is ready for the first Ultimate event in Brazil in 2020. The São Paulo native already had a tough commitment against Kevin Lee No. UFC Brasilia. However, the Brazilian will have one more difficulty in his battle, as his rival failed to cut weight, exceeding the lightweight limit (up to 70,3kg) by 1,1kg. The São Paulo athlete's dilemma is that all those who failed to make the weight cut, and were kept on the cards, won their disputes.

For an athlete, few frustrations are greater than when his opponent does not fulfill his commitment to the scale, since during the week of the fight, he puts his body through intense dehydration processes so that he can reach the limit of his divisions. This year, three cases can be highlighted to confirm the 'nightmare' of weight cutting.

To date, seven cards have been held in Ultimate and the first situation involving an athlete who did not reach the category limit and won the fight the following day happened on February 15, at UFC Rio Rancho.

Ray Borg x Rogério Bontorin

The Brazilian Rogerio Bontorin arrived at UFC Rio Rancho looking to maintain his unbeaten record since debuting for the organization. Ahead, the fighter would have a well-known name in the flyweight division (up to 56,7kg), Ray Borg. Famous for having already competed for the category title (in 2017), the North American sought to increase the number of victories to regain his place among the group's elite.

The former challenger, who has a history of failing to cut weight, however, once again failed to comply with the company's demands and exceeded his weight by 900g. Rogério, however, agreed to face his opponent despite his physical disadvantage.

In the fight, the North American ended up being superior and defeated the man from Pará with a unanimous decision from the judges.

The other two cases of weight cut failures took place on the 29th, one of which even generated great repercussions, as it involved a title dispute. The incidents occurred in UFC Norfolk.

Grant Dawson x Darrick Minner

A promising athlete in the featherweight division, Grant dawson ended up being one of the protagonists at the official weigh-in for the UFC Norfolk, which took place on September 29 of this year. The athlete, who was looking to extend his unbeaten record since debuting in the organization, had a commitment to beat Darrick Minner, however, he ended up failing to do so on the scale, losing almost 2kg. heavier than its rival.

Minner agreed to keep the fight, which marked his Ultimate debut. The American did not expect, however, that he would succumb to Grant's jiu-jitsu, who submitted his opponent in the second round, frustrating his compatriot's debut in the company.

The most recent and controversial case, however, occurred in the main fight of UFC Norfolk, in the struggle between Deiveson Figueiredo e Joseph Benavidez, who would fight for the vacant flyweight belt.

Deiveson x Benavidez

Expectations for the clash between the Brazilian and the North American were high. At the betting shops, Josepeh had an advantage over the Pará native, who promised, during the match, that he would give the public a spectacle. The 'cold shower', however, came on Friday (28), when Deiveson was unable to make weight and exceeded the category limit by around 1,1kg.

The fight continued, but the organization's title would only be valid if the North American won, and he agreed that the fight would be kept on the card.

In the fight, Figueiredo fulfilled what he promised. Acting safely, he dominated his rival during most of the actions. Sharp in his striking, the Brazilian needed two rounds to settle the score and knock out 'Joe' after a brutal sequence of punches.

The result meant that the category remained without a champion and Ultimate is now studying a new date for a new dispute between the two.

Charles x Lee: end of zica?

This Saturday (14), Do Bronx will need to show a lot of concentration so that he does not become one of the victims of the 2020 statistics. The athlete will face a rival who has already shown quality in previous performances and who is coming off a great triumph over the previously undefeated and promising Gregor Gillespie, in one of the fights of UFC 244.

Currently, the São Paulo native is fighting to occupy or surpass Kevin in the division's ranking and reach the top 5 of the group led by Khabib Nurmagomedov. The North American is currently number eight, while the Brazilian is in 13th position.

Charles is going through a great phase in his career. The Brazilian comes from six consecutive victories and great performances. The São Paulo native hasn’t known what it’s like to lose since 2017.
