It was not this time that the Brazilian Jennifer maia may challenge Valentina Shevchenko for the fly title (up to 56,7kg.). In a confrontation on the preliminary card of the UFC 244, which took place this Saturday (2), in New York, the Curitiba native ended up being defeated by Katlyn Chookagin in a unanimous decision by the judges and temporarily ruled out the chance to fight for the division's belt.

Despite the majority decision of the judges, the fight was fought in a very balanced way. The American, however, lived up to her reputation as a 'decision winner' and recorded her tenth consecutive triumph in her career, which now spans 13 appearances.

Before stepping into the octagon, the Curitiba native, who accepted, together with her opponent, the confrontation two weeks in advance, showed confidence in the good result to be able to challenge the unquestionable Valentina Shevchenko.

The defeat marked the sixth negative result for the 'Chute Boxe' athlete and the second since signing her professional contract with Ultimate. The setback also halted Jennifer's two-fight winning streak.

Katlyn, in turn, achieved her second triumph and, still in the octagon, made a point of inferring her desire to face the champion.

The fight

Jennifer started the fight by taking the initiative by throwing a right cross that went blank. Chookagian remained away, avoiding contact with the Brazilian. Maia continued walking upwards and trying to close the distance to try to connect his blows. After just over a minute, the fighters exchanged attacks in the center of the octagon, with a slight advantage for the Curitiba native. The North American tried to take advantage of her larger wingspan and risked kicks to her opponent's body. With two minutes remaining, Jennifer managed to apply a good sequence of blows and managed to press her opponent against the cage. Katlyn, however, managed to get out. At the end of the stage, Chookagian began to grow in combat and let go in the fight. The North American managed to connect two good kicks in a row, one to the head, which exploded in the Brazilian's guard and the other to the belly.

In the second round, the North American continued to wait for the Brazilian's actions and counterattack. Katlyn bet on kicks, but Maia was attentive to her defenses. After a minute, Jennifer applied a cross to her opponent's head, which drew applause from her team. The duel remained balanced, with good attacks from both athletes. Chookagian managed to apply a good 'supergirl punch', which touched the Brazilian's face. Jennifer continued walking forward and tried to corner her rival, who was moving well in the Octagon. Maia showed difficulty finding distance and connecting more effective strikes. In the final seconds, Katlyn managed a good sequence of punches to the Brazilian's face, who did not land any blows.

In the final round, Jennifer needed to go all out to eliminate any doubts about her defeat in the previous stages. The Curitiba native started going forward right from the start and soon pressed her opponent against the fence. Maia tried to apply the takedown, but Chookagian defended well, until she managed to push the Brazilian away. As in the previous rounds, the American continued to take advantage of her greater reach and prevented Jennifer from applying combinations that could lead to a knockout. With just over a minute left until the end of the fight, the Curitiba native managed a good takedown on her opponent and began trying for a submission. In half guard, the Brazilian showed signs of fatigue and did not attack her rival. In the final seconds, the athletes exchanged blows on the ground, but there was no more time.

Life is not going well for the former UFC heavyweight champion (up to 120,2kg), Andrei Arlovski. After staging a career recovery, after beating Ben Rothwell in July, Andrei was defeated again in his career. At the UFC 244, the athlete ended up being easy prey for Jairzinho Rozenstruik on the preliminary card, which delivered a devastating knockout to his rival just 29 seconds into the fight.

The setback marked Arlovski's ninth consecutive defeat in the last 13 meetings.

Jairzinho, in turn, remains undefeated in his career, with nine fights and no setbacks.

Right at the beginning of the fight, Jairzinho connected a good cross to Andrei's chin, who was already staggering. Arlovski tried to recover and attacked Rozentruik. Jairzinho dodged well and, in the counterattack, connected a well-aimed cross to the chin of the former division champion, who fell, forcing the referee to interrupt the fight.

Edmen put on a real show UFC 244. At 21 years of age, the fighter managed, once again, to show that he is not just a promise in the sport. Against Brad Tavares, the athlete showed his repertoire of blows and took his opponent to the ground right at the beginning of the fight. The opponent showed heart and managed to get up, but Shahbazyan took advantage of the good moment and finished the feat with a high kick that led to Tavares being knocked out.

With the triumph, the number of victories the North American has won to 11 since he debuted in his professional career in February 2017. The athlete arrives to threaten the reign of Israel adesanya in the middleweight division (up to 83,9kg.).
