Gaethje criticizes McGregor for asking to fight Frank Edgar: 'Like a slap in the face to me'

North American claims he has tried in every possible way to stage a match against Irishman, who hasn't played in a year

Last Sunday (6), it was one year since Conor McGregor was seen putting on UFC gloves. The Irishman has since been giving hints that he could return to MMA, but his wish has not come true. Justin gaethje, fourth in the lightweight rankings (up to 70,3kg.) states that he has tried in many ways to schedule a fight against the 'Notório', but without success. The athlete still criticizes the Irishman's suggestion to fight against Frankie Edgar. The statement was made in an interview with 'TMZ Sports'.

“He keeps writing that he’s going to fight. On planet Earth there are two people who could face him. I or Dustin poirier. He only had two fights at lightweight in his entire career. He lost one and won the other,” Justin said.

Using the argument of the small number of fights, the North American took the opportunity to criticize the ranking system established by Ultimate. Currently, Conor is in third place, even with so much downtime.

“He's in the number three position for some strange reason. He needs to leave or fight. I think against me or Dustin,” he declared.

On social media, McGregor even suggested a fight against Frankie Edgar, recently defeated by Max Holloway in a duel valid for the featherweight belt (up to 65,7kg.). After losing, Frankie assumed he would leave the division to try his hand at bantamweight (up to 61,2kg). However, after Conor's proposal, the American admitted that he could postpone the plans and exchange forces against the Irishman. For Gaethje, the challenge to Edgar makes no sense.

“He is challenging Frankie Edgar. It’s like a slap in the face for me, for the rest of the lightweights and for the standard we do here”, said the American.

The reason for Justin's indignation is also due to the fact that, according to the athlete, he tried in many ways to convince the Irishman to fight with him.

“I wrote a message seven months ago to try to be your friend. I'm trying all avenues. I'm trying reverse psychology. I'm trying to be his friend. I'm trying every damn route that exists to attract this man to fight and I can't convince him”, concluded the combatant.

Justin, with each fight, has proven that he is an athlete to be feared within the category. In his last engagement, in September, the fighter delivered a brutal knockout to Donald Cerrone, which made him reach fourth place in the rankings and was once again on the radar to compete for the division's belt in the future.
