With the champion's injury Dominick Cruz last week and his departure from the UFC 148 card, challenger Urijah faber has used social media to ask for an interim belt fight against the Brazilian Renan Barao. However, despite UFC president Dana White confirming that an interim title will be put on the line, the champion did not approve of his rival's attitude.
In an interview with the “MMA Hour” program, Cruz stated that a true champion does not choose his fights and spared no criticism of Faber.
“Who the hell are you to pick fights? That's why we have a matchmaker. A champion never chooses his opponents. The only time I will campaign to face someone is to face the Urijah faber, as soon as I heal. I hope he wins so I can face him as soon as he recovers”, said Cruz
Despite Faber's desire to face Renan Barao, Ultimate has not yet confirmed the duel, although Dana's goal is to put an interim belt up for grabs at UFC 148, an event scheduled to take place on July 8, in Las Vegas, in the United States.
