Dustin Poirier on fighting Khabib Nurmagomedov: 'I'm going to hurt him for 25 minutes'

North American responds to comment from Russian, who promised to 'knead' his opponent in the duel between the two

The new interim lightweight champion (up to 70,3kg), Dustin poirier, responded to the Russian's comment Khabib Nurmagomedov saying it will hurt him during the 25 minutes of combat. The comment was made in a recent interview with the program 'MMAWeekly'. The fighters recently started exchanging barbs and promoting the fight to unify the belt, which should take place in September, in Abu Dhabi.

“I'm going to hurt him for 25 minutes. I'm going to try to make your body stop working. This is much more than 'kneading'. I hope he feels the same way; who wants to hurt me, and get me out of there. This is what it means to fight', commented Poirier, responding to the comment that Khabib made in an interview after UFC Saint Petersburg, last weekend.

Dustin poirier qualified to face Khabib after winning a tough battle against Hawaiian Max Hollway, winning the interim belt in the category after the UFC 236, on April 13th. The fight between the Russian and the North American, however, can only be held at the end of the year, when Nurmagomedov will be released from the suspension he is under due to the confusion that occurred after UFC 229, in October last year.

Since returning to the lightweight division in 2015, Poirier has maintained a favorable run in the organization. In 11 fights, the North American emerged victorious on nine occasions, being defeated in one, and adding one fight without result. In his professional MMA record, Dustin, 30 years old, has 30 fights, 25 wins, and five losses.

Khabib, on the other hand, remains undefeated as a professional fighter. The Russian has 27 fights and no defeats. Nurmagomedov debuted in Ultimate in 2012 and won the lightweight belt by defeating the Irishman Conor McGregor.
