In an interview during UFC 230 Media Day, Cormier stated that a triumph over Jones would be more significant to his legacy than a victory over Brock Lesnar.

“A win against Jones would be better, but at the end of the day, if I won, I would still be behind with one win and two losses, so it wouldn't change that much, I would have to stay [active] longer to try to beat him again. If I beat Lesnar, I'll be '1-0', but for the legacy, beating Jones [would be more important]. Because he is the only guy who has beaten me in my entire career, so he would add more to my legacy”, explained Daniel.

The heavyweight champion faced 'Bones' in 2015 and 2017 and lost on both occasions. After the clashes, Jones was caught in a drug test, first for cocaine and then for steroid use. That's why the second fight was reverted to a no result fight. Daniel recognizes that he was also defeated by his rival in the last meeting.

The long-standing rivalry between Cormier and Jones goes beyond the confines of the UFC octagon. The two fighters do not have a good relationship and Daniel constantly criticizes the executioner's behavior. 'DC' assured that he will never like Jon.

“When I see him again, will I want to say something to him? I'll probably say something and provoke. But it doesn't change anything. We will never be friends, we will never be cordial. Me saying he's a good fighter is probably the most nice things we'll ever say about each other. He gave an interview in which he said he was happy for me; I do not believe that. It's okay, he doesn't have to be happy for me. My achievements are my achievements. And on December 29th, if he wins the belt, I won't be happy for him. But his achievement doesn't mean less or more based on my reaction. It's his. It's not Daniel and Jon or Jon and Daniel. AND Jon Jones and é Daniel Cormier. We are two different people. Our reactions to each other’s successes don’t mean much,” concluded Cormier.
