Johnson says fighting Reis is just a step towards history

If he passes the Brazilian next Saturday (15), the champion will equal Anderson Silva in the number of defenses followed by the belt

Even if you can make history by equaling Anderson Silva as the most dominant champion in UFC history, Demetrious Johnson don't see the duel with Wilson reis, which will be the main fight of UFC Kansas this Saturday (15), as historic. The North American guarantees that his main objective was never to be like Spider, but rather to surpass him.

If he passes Reis, Johnson will have made 10 consecutive defenses of his flyweight belt, the same number as Anderson Silva achieved when he was middleweight champion between 2006 and 2013 (during this period, however, the Brazilian had some fights at light heavyweight).

“Number 10 is just one step. The ultimate goal is 11 belt defenses. It's like Floyd Mayweather, when he reached 49 wins and no losses (equaling Rocky Marciano). Why did he decide to stop at 49-0, when he could have reached 50 wins and been the only one in boxing history to reach that mark? No, I'm going beyond number 10. My goal is to get past ten belt defenses,” Johnson commented to the North American website MMA Junkie.

The North American, however, does not seem to be belittling Wilson reis. Johnson just seems happy to have gotten to where he is. He says he is surprised to have become champion and that he didn't expect to be close to breaking Anderson's record.

PUBLICITY:

“I have the belt. Let's say I get there on Saturday, against Wilson, and lose. Even so, I exceeded all the expectations I had when I entered this sport. I'm very happy with my career, with everything I've done and excited to continue building more things and surpassing my initial expectations even further”, said the champion.
