On Wednesday last week (June 1), the 32-year-old athlete was shot while in a restaurant and was rushed to hospital, where he underwent surgery and lost a kidney. After regaining consciousness, Shamhalaev caused great commotion with the medical and nursing staff.
According to reports in the local press, the fighter even attacked nurses in the first few days he woke up, which doctors classify as a hallucinogenic effect of the medications he was given.
Days later, dressed only in a hospital gown, Shamhalaev fled the scene, but was detained by doctors still in the garden. The athlete was behaving frantically and assured that he was already well, and therefore no longer needed treatment.
“He pushed all the doctors and shouted that he needed to leave the place immediately. He ran out of the ICU. He regained consciousness, but his lungs are still in a delicate situation. We intended to keep him under observation for at least another four days”, commented one of the doctors to the newspaper “Caucasian Knot”.
At 32 years old, Shamhalaev has a professional record of 12 wins, three losses and one draw. In 2013, he won the Bellator GP title, which gave him the right to challenge for the featherweight belt. The Russian ended up submitted by Pat Curran in the first round, and then lost again to Brazilian Fabrício Guerreiro. It was his last professional MMA fight to date.
