The imbroglio involving Fabricio Werdum and his participation in UFC 196 continues to give people something to talk about. Also UFC heavyweight, veteran Josh Barnett gave his opinions on the situation and said he understands the Brazilian's position, but considers that the champion should “use a better excuse” to leave the fight.

On Sunday night (24), Cain Velazquez, Werdum's original opponent, announced that he would be unable to fight due to a back injury. The UFC then immediately escalated Stipe Miocic to challenge the Brazilian for the belt. However, on Monday, Werdum said he would not fight as he also suffers from injuries. The gaucho stated that he would even make a sacrifice if his opponent was Velasquez, but the change to Miocic made him withdraw from the fight.

Barnett, ranked eighth in the category, believes Werdum should have accepted the fight anyway. “I understand his fear, but should he accept this fight? I think it should. He should show up and take that guy out. Or, at least, that he would come up with a better excuse. But it's his life, not mine. The fans will judge him and think what they want to think”, said the fighter, in a press conference reproduced by the North American website “MMA Fighting”.

Even disagreeing with the Brazilian's position, Barnett stated that he understands the reasons that made Werdum make the decision. “I could say something bombastic and negative to gain fame, but I won't do that. He has to live with whatever decisions he makes and we know he will upset the boss, of course. But I can understand your reasoning,” he added.

So far, the UFC has not announced what the plans are for the main fight of the event, which takes place on February 6th. Barnett, in turn, returns to the octagon this Saturday (30), when he faces Ben Rothwell.
