Big favorite to face Jessica Pile Driver, Mackenzie dern had an unfortunate surprise when sharing the octagon with her compatriot in the UFC 295. Known for her aggressive style of moving forward and looking for shortcuts to put her flagship in play, the jiu-jitsu world champion was frustrated with the strategy outlined by her rival.

“I tried to use a strategy in which I knew Jessica was experienced and had come from three defeats. I knew that if she was like me, she would want to correct her mistakes, so I knew there was a good chance she would turn out a little different than usual. When I say different, I mean a little calmer. During the entire fight, her corner was saying: 'Calm down! Calm! This is the fight we want”, explained Dern during an interview with 'The MMA Hour'.

Realizing that Jessica would not fall into her trap, Mackenzie was affected by the former champion's hard blows.

“We expected her to come forward and for me to get a takedown easily, for it to be at the right time. But, yeah, she remained calm and I was trying to do that whole style, like hit, leave, hit, leave; make her come forward and then knock her down. But she was calm and I was caught. I'm trying to evolve, but I'm a pressure fighter. I need to move forward and keep them grounded. It's not a secret, you know? I need to keep this game going,” she concluded.
