On the eve of fighting for the welterweight belt (up to 77,1 kg) against the champion Leon edwards in the main fight of UFC 296, this Saturday (16), Colby covington He already has a possible target in mind for his first challenge if he becomes champion. And this is not about any athlete from his own division, but rather the middleweight champion (up to 83,9 kg) Sean Strickland.
In an interview with the Australian portal 'CODE Sports', Covington did not mince words when criticizing Strickland and expressed his desire to face the middleweight champion in the Ultimate Octagon.
“He's pretending to be everything he wanted me to be. I would love to slap Strickland around. He's just a pathetic excuse for a human being, the guy literally has no IQ. He's f***ing stupid. The things he says, he needs to keep his mouth shut and I'm the guy to do that. The UFC knows that I'm the one who can take down these guys who hate the organization and hate the world, so I would love to fight with Sean Strickland”, stated the challenger for the welterweight belt.
During the interview, Colby covington was also asked about a possible fight against another middleweight: former champion Robert whittaker. The North American, however, ruled out the possibility.
“No, that ship has sailed. Robert lost the title fight and lost the challenger fight, so he's no longer relevant, it doesn't make sense to me. I'm at the top of the division and I'm about to become welterweight champion of the world, so I just want the best and biggest fights that the UFC has to offer and I know that they wouldn't even try to waste my time and their time trying to make that fight. It's a business and they want to make money, so it's all about putting on the biggest and best fights for the fans and the UFC. Whatever the UFC says, I'm a guy who says yes, I'm a guy for the organization.”
