The atmosphere heated up between the two main candidates for the welterweight title (up to 77kg.) of the UFC. Colby covington, challenging for the belt, spared no criticism of the champion Leon edwards, in a controversial interview with the website All Out Fighting. The North American called the Englishman a “cheater” and “idiot”, and questioned his intelligence and education before the fight in the UFC 296 on December 16th.
Covington, who is coming off a victory over Jorge masvidal, said that Edwards is the biggest cheater the sport has ever known, and that he was prepared to face all of his cheating in the octagon. He cited the episode in which the Englishman hit a finger in the eye of Belal Muhammad | and also accused his rival of kicking his opponents' private parts and holding the fence to avoid falls.

“As a fighter, Leon (Edwards) is the biggest cheat the sport has ever known. I thought 'Marty' (Usman) was a cheater. Man, this guy makes 'Marty' look like a goddamn saint. Leon is a cheater. He hits people in the eyes, kicking fighters in the balls, holding the fence. The guy is the biggest cheater the sport has ever seen and that's the only way I was able to prepare for him. Just preparing myself for all the cheating he’s going to do,” Covington said.

Covington blasts Edwards
Covington's offenses were not limited to Edwards' professional appearance. The North American also attacked the Englishman as a person, and doubted his intellectual capacity and his level of education. He referred to the champion as “Low IQ Leon” and said he is a waste of chromosomes and space.
“As a person, Leon, also known as 'Low IQ Leon', what is his education level? I swear, this guy is a grumpy, bumbling idiot. As a person, I think it's a waste of chromosomes and space. I'd love to know, can anyone tell me - any journalist, that's all I want from the journalists out there, please dive into Leon Scott's IQ. What is his education level? Did he graduate from high school? Did he reach elementary school? Because the guy is dumber than a box of rocks,” he concluded.
Leon edwards, who won the belt by defeating Kamaru Usman in August 2022, did not comment on the statements of Colby covington. The Englishman, who is undefeated in 11 fights, also won a rematch in March this year. They will face each other in UFC 296, on December 16, in Las Vegas, in the main fight of the event.
