After Jorge masvidal announce retirement, the BMF belt became vacant and the UFC elected Justin gaethje e Dustin poirier as the next fighters to compete for the title. Protagonist of the main fight in UFC 291, the 'Bad boy' seems not to have been moved by his competitive status in the organization. According to the fighter, the positive side of the confrontation will be the financial return.

“My real assessment: When Masvidal and Diaz fought over this, I was like, 'That's stupid.' I still think it's kind of stupid. However, to the fans who say it's stupid, I say it's ultimately the UFC giving yet another fighter one more opportunity to win and earn an opportunity to get pay-per-view points. This belt, like the interim belts, on paper, is a championship. You are a champion in the eyes of the UFC, and when you are a champion in the eyes of the UFC, you get a different salary,” Gaethje told 'Cageside Press'.

Currently placed third in the lightweight division (up to 70,3kg), Gaethje is coming off a victory after overcoming Raphael Fiziev at the points. Known for his aggressive style, the fighter has already recorded several performance bonuses and can guarantee one more, if he repeats his fight in 2018 against Poirier.
