In a recent interview with the North American “ESPN”, Dana White stated that, if Francis Ngannou remains away from the Octagon for the rest of the year, it is likely that Jones will have the opportunity to become interim champion.

“I haven't thought about it yet, but yeah, it sounds like something we would do. Not until we know what Francis (Ngannou) is going to do or what is going to happen. But if that's the case, if he's out for a year, Jon (Jones) could come in and fight for a belt,” said Dana White.

Linear heavyweight champion, Francis Ngannou suffered a knee injury before the duel for the unification of the belts against Cyryl Gane, in January, and will be away from the Octagon for an indefinite period of time. In addition to the injury, the Cameroonian also has contractual issues to resolve with Ultimate and his stay in the organization is not guaranteed.

Former light heavyweight champion (up to 93 kg), Jon Jones has not been in action since February 2020, when he defeated Dominick reyes and defended the division belt for the eleventh time. Also with contractual disputes with Ultimate, Jones gave up the light heavyweight title and decided to focus on moving up a division to heavyweight.
