Ultimate's decision to promote a catchweight in the main fight of UFC Las Vegas 49, which takes place next Saturday (26), continues to cause controversy among the MMA community. Former fighter and current commentator, Chael Sonnen revealed that he did not understand the new combination so that Islam makhachev e Bobby Green face each other in a duel at 72,5kg.

According to Sonnen, Makhachev would already be prepared to fight in the lightweight division (up to 70,3kg), as he would face Beneil Dariush at the same event, just as Green had just fought – and won – Nasrat Haqparast No. UFC 271.

“I don't know where this weight tolerance came from. We would have to believe that Bobby (Green) knew. He could gain weight because we saw him in action 13 days ago. He has another 13 days to make the same weight, but I don't think Islam (Makhachev) would ask for a weight increase because of a change of opponent. After all, Islam planned to fight anyway,” Sonnen said on his official channel on 'YouTube'.

Despite taking place at catchweight, the duel could mean a chance for the lightweight belt (up to 70,3kg) for Makhachev, if he wins. Islam is on a nine-fight winning streak and would initially face Dariush – who had an ankle injury that made him unable to be on the card. The Russian will now face Green in the main fight of the night.
