“(Colby) Covington is the number 1 contender. I love the 'Durinho vs. Thompson' fight. It's a very good fight, a fun fight but it won't define the next title contender. We are already looking at some dates for 'Usman vs. Colby'. Nothing has been decided yet but we are already working on it”, said Dana at the media day of the UFC 264.
Protagonists in the main fight of the night, Durinho and Thompson occupy, respectively, positions two and four in the welterweight rankings. The two athletes are looking for a new opportunity to compete for the category belt. The Brazilian was defeated by the current champion, Kamaru Usman, in February of this year. The North American fought for the title twice, in 2016 and 2017, against the then leader Tyron woodley and managed a draw and a defeat.
The title fight between Colby and Usman will mark the second confrontation between the two athletes. On the first occasion, in December 2019, the two fighters were the protagonists of the UFC 245. After a very balanced fight, the Nigerian managed a knockout in the fifth round over 'Chaos' and successfully defended his title.
