Irritated by the agreement between Conor McGregor and Dustin Poirier, Dana White guarantees that the fight will take place in the lightweight category

Apparently, the complaint of Khabib Nurmagomedov was answered by Dana White. The UFC lightweight champion (70,3kg) was not happy to know that Conor McGregor e Dustin poirier were agreeing to hold a rematch in the welterweight division (77,6kg), took a public stance and the president of the organization not only agreed with the Russian, but was even more vehement in commenting on the case.

In an interview with the channel BT Sport, Dana did not hide his irritation with the rumor and explained that, for both of them to get closer to a new chance to face Khabib, the duel has to be valid at lightweight, a category in which the Irishman was champion and the North American, interim champion. The top hat also highlighted that meaningless fights are a specialty of other organizations and not the UFC.

“This fight will be at lightweight! I'm not going to have an absurdly high-dollar fight at a weight that means nothing. This fight is worthless at welterweight! None of them are ranked there. If they fought at welterweight, this fight would be worthless for the lightweight division. Does not make sense! There are many organizations that carry out meaningless struggles. You can watch this type of fight every weekend. That’s not what the UFC does,” said Dana.

According to information from the UFC president himself, the new meeting between McGregor and Poirier should take place in January 2021 and the pair agreed on the date, but negotiations have not yet been concluded. Dana even praised the Irish star's intelligence and seriousness and believes that the athlete will return to MMA in a different way.

“The contracts have not yet been signed. McGregor likes to play and does what he wants. One thing he doesn't do is commit to a fight and not show up. McGregor fights! Things will change. This is not the same McGregor as before. Now, he is very rich and I think he is in a position where he will only make the moves that he thinks are right,” he concluded.

It is worth remembering that, despite Dana White's statement, the UFC allowed Conor McGregor performed twice as a welterweight and the result would interfere with the development of the lightweight division. The first time was against Nate diaz, in 2016, when he won the rematch and faced Eddie Alvarez, champion of the category at the time, next. The second was the meeting with Donald Cerrone, in January 2020, which saw the Irish star return from retirement and into the lightweight ranks.
