The Brazilian Thiago Marreta underwent surgery lasting more than four hours, in Los Angeles (USA), to correct problems in both knees as a result of his tough fight against the North American Jon Jones for the light heavyweight title (up to 93kg.), held on the 6th. On that occasion, Marreta completely ruptured the anterior cruciate ligament in his left knee, suffered a fracture in his tibia, in addition to partial tears in the medial collateral ligament and meniscus. The former UFC light heavyweight title challenger will travel this Friday (19), to Las Vegas, where he will begin the physiotherapy process for the future normalization of his physical conditions. The treatment will be carried out at the Ultimate Performance Institute itself. In an interview with 'Esporte Espetacular', the Institute's Director of Physiotherapy, Dr. Heather Linden, reveals that the expectation is that the athlete from Cidade de Deus (RJ) will be away from fights for approximately eight months, due to the degree of the injury .

“In the case of extensive rehabilitation, as is the case, generally the athlete must return to training between six and eight months, and we would like to see him, at the end of these eight months, training to fight. In four months, he should be able to do some sports exercises that don't have much impact on the knee. In six months, we started to add more impact, some grappling training in controlled environments”, said the professional. “In eight months, he will be able to start training almost everything again, as long as everything goes as we are planning. But it will take 8 to 12 months before we see Thiago back in the octagon. We want to make sure that he recovers as best as possible, that both knees are 100% and that nothing will slow him down when he wants to return to the octagon,” said Heather.

If Linden's predictions are confirmed, Marreta would be able to play between March and July next year. However, it is up to the fighter's body to respond well to the procedures involved that aim to improve it and seek to return the athlete to performing at a high level.
