"Anthony Pettis, there is no way I can allow you to be ahead of me (in the rankings). Come fight with a real lightweight. You're going to get a beating. You won’t be as lucky as last time,” Ponzinibbio posted.

Despite being born in Argentina, Santiago managed to avoid the rivalry between his country of origin and Brazil, which is largely the result of football's history. Ponzinibbio won over fans in the Brazilian country when he participated in the second edition of TUF Brasil, in which he won the right to compete in the final, but was prevented from doing so due to an injury suffered in the qualifier, when he defeated Leo Santos. Throughout the reality show, the Argentine showed a lot of respect and admiration for Brazil.

Anthony Pettis he was lightweight champion (up to 70,3kg.) when he dethroned Ben henderson, who reigned in the division between 2012 and 2013. Pettis had already taken the belt, in the same division, from Henderson when they worked for the WEC (World Extreme Cagefighting), in 2010. A superfight between Anthony and the Brazilian José Aldo, at the time, former featherweight champion (up to 65,7 kg.) was heavily speculated behind the scenes of the fight, but the clash between the athletes never happened.

The American competed in his last fight at welterweight and scored an impressive knockout over his compatriot Stephen Thompson, in March of this year, with a flying punch in the second round. After the victory, Pettis was once again in the organization's spotlight.

Santiago debuted in the UFC in 2013 and, since then, has had a record of 11 fights and nine wins in the organization. The Argentine comes from seven trump cards in a row. His last setback came in 2015, when he was defeated by the American Lorenz Larkin, at UFC Florida.
