UFC Nashville: Jussier Formiga beats Deiveson Figueiredo and challenges Cejudo: 'He has to defend the belt'

Leader of the flyweight rankings, Formiga had a safe fight, beat Figueiredo and dreams of the flyweight belt

If there were any doubts, they no longer exist! The Potiguar Jussier formiga climbed into the Octagon UFC Nashville, this Saturday (23), as number one in the flyweight rankings. With a safe performance, practically without errors, he beat his compatriot Deiveson Figueiredo, fourth in the classification, in the unanimous decision of the judges (29-28, 30-27, 29-28) and proved that he deserves the chance to challenge the champion Henry Cejudo.

With the result, Formiga reaches his 23rd victory as a professional, his fourth in a row in Ultimate. On the other hand, Deiveson suffered his first career defeat in 16 fights.

Still in the octagon, Formiga didn't miss the chance to challenge the champion of the flyweight division. “(Henry) Cejudo is a braggart! He has to defend his belt against me”, he said.

The fight

The fight between Formiga and Deiveson started out studied. With the real chance of competing for the title at stake, the athletes were careful not to make mistakes. Figueiredo feinted well, but struck little, while Jussier waited to counterattack. Halfway through the partial, Formiga attacked the takedown and placed Deiveson on his back on the ground. The fighter from Pará still managed to get up, but was knocked down again and the fighter from Rio Grande do Norte took advantage of the round.

In the second round, Deiveson tried to take the lead from the previous half and opened the game. He even connected with good blows, but Formiga took advantage of the first opportunity to counterattack with a takedown. Despite being lower on the ground, Figueiredo was the one who attacked the most. With an elbow from below, he opened the deep cut on Jussier's forehead.

At a disadvantage on the judges' scorecards, Deiveson returned even more aggressive for the third round. He hunted Formiga around the octagon, but Jussier was circulating to avoid exposing himself. The native of Rio Grande do Norte only attacked when he managed a takedown and gained half guard. With just over a minute left, Deiveson got back to his feet, but was unable to threaten his opponent.
