Georges St-Pierre declares that UFC vetoed fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov

The former welterweight and middleweight champion revealed that he tried to fight the Russian before making his retirement official, but Ultimate had no interest.

Former welterweight and middleweight champion Georges St-Pierre announced his retirement this Thursday (21). Before 'Rush' made his departure from professional MMA official, Khabib Nurmagomedov He asked him to reconsider and accept a fight with him. At a press conference in Montreal (CAN), the Canadian revealed that he was interested in facing 'The Eagle' and tried to hold the meeting, but the UFC vetoed the duel.

“At the stage I'm at in my career, the most exciting thing is also the scariest: fighting an opponent who seems invincible. And Khabib is that guy now. That's why I wanted to fight him. It was a fight that could elevate my legacy. Unfortunately, it takes two fighters and the organization to make the fight happen. (…) I wish Khabib luck. I'm a big fan. In 2013, St. Pierre announced that he would hang up his gloves after successfully defending his welterweight belt in a duel against John hendricks. The Canadian spent almost four years without competing and returned to Ultimate at the end of 2017, when he submitted Michael Bisping and won the middleweight title.

After the fight, Georges stepped away from Ultimate due to health problems and left the middleweight title vacant. In his 17 years as a professional fighter, St. Pierre had 28 fights, 26 wins and only two losses.
