On the eve of his return to the UFC, Cain Velasquez plans a fight with Jon Jones

The former heavyweight champion revealed that he returned to Ultimate to beat the best fighters and put 'Bones' at the top of his list: 'he's a challenge, but I think I can defeat him'

After a 30-month hiatus, Cain Velazquez will make his return to Ultimate at UFC Phoenix, this Sunday (17). The former heavyweight champion will face off against Francis Ngannou in the main fight. Recovered from his injuries, the American of Mexican origin revealed that he returned to Ultimate to beat the best fighters and put Jon Jones at the top of the list.

“I think I can (win Jon Jones). I think I'm good enough. […] Jon Jones He is an incredible athlete and I watched all his fights. I know what he's capable of. Again, every guy is a great challenge and I think he is a challenge, but I think I can beat him,” Velasquez told the North American website TMZ Sports.

The former heavyweight champion stated that he will wait for his teammate and friend to retire, Daniel Cormier to regain the title. Even so, he believes he is ready to take on the top of the category again.

“I will fight anyone. That's why I'm in this sport: to fight with the best, to be the best of all. For me, I have to go out there, do my best and beat the best fighters”, concluded Cain.

The American of Mexican origin won the heavyweight title for the first time at UFC 121 in October 2010, when he knocked out Brock Lesnar. In his first title defense, Velasquez was knocked out by Júnior 'Cigano'. Cain dethroned the Brazilian in December 2012 by winning by unanimous decision. He remained champion until June 2015, when he was submitted by Fabricio Werdum.
