In an interview with the North American website MMA Weekly, Cormier said he has not yet recovered from the injury he suffered during his last fight at UFC 230 in November last year, when he submitted Derrick Lewis. Even without having to undergo surgery, Daniel stated that he needs more time to recover and return to fighting.
“I screwed up my back at UFC 230. I didn't recover as quickly as I wanted. I need to take a vacation. I had to take some time off to try to get healthy because my schedule was so heavy last year. Three fights, three training camps for five rounds, very heavy training camps. I did “The Ultimate Fighter”, I had my commentary duties, I took a job as a high school wrestling coach in the middle of the year. It was a very, very heavy year and I needed time to put everything in order”, said Cormier.
The heavyweight champion stated that he will only talk about a possible return if he recovers from the injury in time to be able to fight in 2019.
“When I get better I will start to see what I can do, but for now I have to recover and get better. I am waiting. When I feel better, we will talk. The UFC and I will talk when I recover and we will see a fight”, concluded Daniel.
Cormier revealed that he would not retire at age 40 in an interview with the North American program MMA Hour, on December 31st of last year. ‘DC’s’ statement encouraged the organization’s president, Dana White, who had already asked for his farewell to the sport to be postponed. The president plans three more fights for the champion in the franchise against Brock Lesnar, Stipe Miocic e Jon Jones.
