Cat Zingano files appeal to annul UFC 232 fight result

The fighter's lawyer argues that Anderson injured Cat's eye with his toe and therefore it can be considered an illegal blow under the Unified MMA Rules

Zingano cat was defeated by Megan anderson on the preliminary card of UFC 232, on December 29, in Los Angeles (USA). The fight ended with a technical knockout after the Australian landed a kick to the North American's face that grazed her right eye. The blow meant that 'Alpha' could not see and so he remained with his eyes closed until the end of the fight was declared.

Due to the unusual outcome of the fight, Zingano filed an appeal with the California State Athletic Commission (CSAC) to try to overturn the technical knockout result for 'No Contest' (fight without result). Cat's lawyer, Nathan Gable, claims that Anderson's blow can be considered illegal under the Unified Rules of MMA, as he hit his toe in his rival's eye.

“The language of the Unified Rules regarding injury to the eye is not complete and the examples listed, 'hitting the eyes by means of fingers, chin or elbow', do not mean that they are the only methods by which a foul can occur. First, the language is clearly open-ended, beginning with 'eye scratched in any way…'. If the Unified Rules had intended to limit this fault only to the examples that followed and exclude toes from this fault, this rule would have been written with limiting language such as 'only piercing of the eyes by means of fingers, chin or elbow is illegal', and would omit the words 'in any way'”, Gable explained to the North American website MMA Junkie.

The appeal was filed with CSAC on January 07th. If Zingano manages to have the result of the fight annulled, Ultimate should schedule a rematch between the featherweights soon.
