The California Athletic Commission released Jon Jones to fight again and proposed that he undergo tests at the Voluntary Anti-Doping Agency (VADA). 'Bones' refused the commission's offer, but was caught by the United States Anti-Doping Agency (USADA) with traces of a banned substance in his body. Shortly after the incident, the former light heavyweight champion reversed himself and agreed to carry out voluntary tests.

According to the North American ESPN channel, agreeing to undergo the exams was one of the conditions imposed by the California Commission to authorize Jones' participation in Inglewood, the new location of UFC 232. Jones will undergo VADA exams for six months.

The amount for the tests will be paid with the amount of US$205 that Jones paid as a fine after the doping case in 2017. At the time, Jon won Daniel Cormier and was caught for using the substance turinabol. Same stimulant found in a test carried out by USADA.

Jones was cleared by USADA of the case at UFC 232, but was not cleared by the Nevada Athletic Commission to fight in Las Vegas. The denial to Ultimate occurred because the entity claimed that it would not have enough time to investigate the results of the exams until December 29th. As a result, the organization moved the event from T-Mobile Arena to The Forum in Inglewood, California.
