The Brave organization has once again shown that it is at the forefront of the main changes in MMA with the creation of new categories, designed to give more options to athletes who have problems with extreme weight cuts. The change was officially announced during Brave 19, played last Saturday (08), in South Africa.

Officially, Brave will have two new categories, super lightweight (up to 74,8 kg) and super welterweight (up to 79,3 kg). The changes are in accordance with the new divisions designated by the recently approved unified MMA rules.

With the installation of the new categories, the old welterweight division will be abolished and its current champion, Jordanian Jarrah Al-Selawe, will now own the super welterweight belt.

Athletes who have trouble making the old welterweight limit but don't see themselves competing with middleweight fighters will have the option of moving into the super welterweight division, while those who don't feel comfortable cutting weight down to lightweight will be able to venture into superlights.

The change was well received by athletes in the categories involved and, especially, by Kirik Jenness, English-language commentator for Brave events.

“There are many problems to be corrected in MMA. But one that can be fixed now is severe weight cutting. A lot of people in this sport end up cutting 15 or 20 kg to fight. There are changes underway and one of them is the addition of new divisions. Most international organizations haven't done anything yet, but Brave has just done it,” Jenness pointed out.
