Thiago Marreta defeats Manuwa, but Alex Cowboy is submitted at UFC 231

The main card of UFC 231 brought Brazil one defeat and one victory. While Thiago Marreta knocked out Jimmi Manuwa 41 seconds into the second round and should move up in the light heavyweight rankings, Alex Cowboy was submitted by Gunnar Nelson with a rear naked choke at 4:17 of the second round.

Gunnar Nelson beat Alex Oliveira via rear naked choke submission at 4:17 of the second round of the UFC 231 main card. He dominated the ground game and didn't let the Brazilian apply his strategy. Thus, 'Gunni' recorded the 17th victory in his career and recovered from the defeat to Santiago Ponzinibbio. 'Cowboy' ends the streak of two consecutive victories in the organization.

The welterweight fight started with Gunnar trying to take Cowboy to the cage. The Brazilian held on to the cage and was warned by the referee. Nelson put pressure on his rival in the octagon, took him down and tried to submit him. Alex managed to get out of the grip and started throwing elbows at his opponent. Thus, the first round ended.

The second round began with Cowboy's attack, which threw his opponent against the cage and struck. Nelson managed to get out of the corner and applied a takedown that knocked the Brazilian down. Bochniak started the second round anyway. He attempted a takedown but Dawodu managed to spin and escape the hold. Dawodu tried to land punches to continue scoring. The fighters tried to apply some blows, but the confrontation remained slow until it was finished.

The last round began with Dawodu's attack, but his rival managed to hold on and take him to the fence. Hakeen fenced and got out of position. Bochniak found an opening and managed to take down his opponent. Standing up, the Canadian closed the distance and landed good kicks and blows to the body. With the sound of the gong the duel ended.
