UFC Adelaide: With a comeback, Mauricio Shogun knocks out Tyson Pedro and once again sets his sights on the belt

In a clash of generations, the Brazilian's experience overlaps and Shogun knocks out the young Australian 43 seconds into the third round

Mauricio Shogun showed Ultimate that experience can overcome youth. The Brazilian overcame a 'choke' he suffered in the first round, turned the game around and won Tyson Peter by knockout 43 seconds into the third round. The fight was the co-main event of UFC Adelaide, held on Saturday (01), in Australia.

Thus, the Curitiba native managed to recover from a defeat to Anthony Smith at UFC Hamburg in July this year. The MMA legend scores the 26th victory in his professional career. The young Australian adds the second consecutive defeat to his record. In six fights in Ultimate, Pedro has three victories.

The fight

Shogun took the initiative in the fight by chasing his rival. The first direct contract was from Pedro who surprised when he landed a sequence of jab and direct that made the Brazilian wobble. So, the Australian went for it, but Maurício clinched and applied an uppercut that his rival felt. In response, Tyson managed to land a sequence of blows that made the Curitiba native see stars and almost get knocked out. The Australian attempted the takedown and his opponent managed to recover.

The light heavyweights began the second round of the fight by exchanging blows. The Brazilian managed to hold his rival on the fence and take Pedro down. Shogun didn't let go of the grip and managed to stay in the 100kg position. He pinned Tyson to the ground and tried to land punches to the head and body. With difficulty the Australian managed to get up, but was taken to the ground by the Curitiba native who kept him glued to the ground.

Excited by the good moment in the previous part, Shogun came back with everything at the beginning of the third round. He landed a right cross that took Pedro to the ground. The Brazilian went up and ran over Tyson with punches from above on the ground. Thus, Maurício wins by technical knockout.

With the support of the Australian fans, Mark Hunt made a triumphant entrance by taking the aboriginal ritual, 'Haka' to Ultimate. However, inside the octagon the 'Super Samoan' showed apathy in his last fight under his contract with the UFC. As a result, he was defeated by Justin Willis in a unanimous decision by the judges (29-28, 29-28, 29-28).

Thus, the New Zealander, after eight years in Ultimate, says goodbye with three consecutive defeats in his career. His last victory was over Frank mir in March 2016 at UFC Brisbane. At 31 years old, Justin Willis wins his eighth victory in nine career fights.

The clash between the heavyweights started off studied and cautious, as the blows could come in and knock out. Willis landed a few shots on the New Zealander who defended well. Hunt managed to land a right kick to his rival's waistline. He remained on the attack, placing crosses and kicks. One of the attacks defended by Justin made the 'Super Samoan's' leg bleed. Next, the fighters applied blows that passed close but did not hit the opponent. Thus, the first round comes to an end.

Keeping the pace, the second round started slowly. Few attacks were made by the athletes until the end of the first minute. Willis tried to land punches that graze Hunt's face. Without any attacks, the crowd began to boo the fighters. So, they tried to hit the opponent directly. The fight continued hotly until the bell sounded.

The last assault started apathetically. Some blows from Willis come in effectively and rock Hunt. Looking different, Mark tried to move and dodge his rival's blows. The fans tried to put a 'gas' on the 'Super Samoan' who threw some punches at his opponent. With 1m30s remaining, the fighters accelerated the duel. Justin's attacks went in, but the veteran's went empty. Without more time, the fight comes to an end.

Tony Martin entered the octagon and showed the Australian fans the power and technique of his jiu-jitsu. The North American finished Jake matthews with a hand triangle at 1:19 of the third round. With the triumph over one of the local idols, he achieved the third consecutive victory in his career.

The home defeat halted Matthews' three-game winning streak. The athlete who sought to place himself among the best in the welterweight division.

With the crowd in favor, Matthews took the initiative and launched a right cross into his rival's guard. With the Australian moving around the cage, the North American tried to land a punch, but in response he received a combination of jab and straight shot. The welterweights tried to land good shots that went empty. Surprisingly, Jake applied some crosses that made Tony fall to the ground. The local tried to apply a guillotine, but the position is not well adjusted. Thus, the opponent applied a sweep and came out on top. Without more time, the first round came to an end.

The North American started the second round by taking the initiative. Martin landed a low kick. More cautious, the Australian studies his rival. In an Ultimate debutant fight, Sodiq Yusuf showed his superiority in striking and knocked out Suman Mokhtarian at 2:14 of the first round. Even so, the home owner complained about the referee's interruption, as he believed he could reverse the result.

Born in the Contender Series, the Nigerian wins the seventh victory in his career. Meanwhile, the Australian loses his unbeaten record after eight fights.

The newcomers' fight got off to a busy start. Mokhtarian dominated the center of the octagon and started attacking his rival with a kick to the waist. In response, Yusuff closed the distance and threw many uppercuts. Seeking to interrupt the barrage of blows, Suman grabbed his opponent and pressed him against the cage. The Nigerian managed to reverse the position and threw knees at his opponent's thigh. Looking for the knockout, Sodiq applied hard crosses to the Australian who accepted the exchange. 'Super' delivers many blows that his antagonist could only cover and defend himself. Thus, the judge ended the fight.

Coming from the Contender Series, Jim Crute showed what he was capable of in his Ultimate debut in Australia. The owner of the house used his jiu-jitsu and submitted Paul Craig with a kimura at 4:51 of the third round. Thus, the young fighter has eight wins in eight fights as a professional MMA fighter.

Paul Craig He added the third defeat in his career after being submitted by the Australian. And he still has three setbacks in his last four clashes.

The fight between the light heavyweights got off to a busy start. Crute's shot went empty, but in response his opponent hit a shot from mid-height. Imposing his game, the Scot managed to take down his rival with ease and worked on his guard. Jim tried to get out from under his opponent with a sweep, but was prevented and only entered half guard. Upon leaving the catch, the Australian attacked his rival. Paul took the fight to the ground and tried to apply a triangle. However, his rival came out and managed to execute a kata-gatame, but was unable to do so to the point of submitting his opponent. The confrontation was back on track, but there was no time for anything else.

The second round began with Craig taking the fight to the ground again. He pressed the Australian against the cage and elbowed him in the head. Jim tried to move away from the corner of the cage, managed to get up and free himself from the hold. Paul tried to catch his rival's legs a few times until he managed to take him down. 'Bruto' threatened to apply a kimura, but was swept by Craig. Thus, the second round came to an end.

The last round started even hotter. Crute landed a right cross on his rival who responded with a high kick. The Scot maintained his strategy and dived at Paul's legs, who escaped and fell on top in half guard. The Australian tried to apply a kimura, but was unable to lock the position. Applying his jiu-jitsu technique, Jim tried to submit his opponent with kata-gatame, but as he had a high hip he couldn't make the Scot tap out. Confident of victory, 'Bruto' attacked Paul again with the kimura that came in and hit him. The duel between the light heavyweights ended at 4:51.
