The Ukrainian's eighth defense of the World Boxing Council belt Vitali Klitschko took place on Saturday night, in Munich, Germany. In a weekend full of confusion, Klitschko beat the English challenger Derek Chisora and kept the title in his possession.
It all started at the official weigh-in on Friday. At the time of the traditional gaze, Chisora slapped Klitschko in the face, who had to be restrained so as not to fight back. Outraged by what he considered “unsportsmanlike behavior”, CMB president José Sulaimán fined the Briton.
The fight, which took place at Olympiahalle, packed with 12.500 Klitschko fans, was preceded by another bizarre moment starring Chisora. During the fighters' introduction, the challenger spat water in the face of Wladimir Klitschko, Vitali's younger brother and cornerman. Wlad would have been Chisora's original opponent, but the fight was postponed twice before being permanently cancelled.
At 40 years old, Vitali dominated most of the fight against his opponent who was 12 years younger. Taking advantage of his advantage in height and wingspan, Klitschko won by unanimous decision, despite having to deal with his rival's aggressive stance. Despite being defeated, Chisora won over the public with his bravery, becoming the fighter who gave Vitali the most trouble since he was defeated by Lennox Lewis in 2003.
After the fight, confusion was created again. During the post-fight press conference, David Haye, Vitali Klitschko's possible next opponent, began to provoke Dereck Chisora, who left his place on stage and went to meet his compatriot. A general fight broke out, including Chisora threatening to shoot Haye.
This Sunday, when trying to board a flight back to London, Chisora and his trainer Don Charles were detained by German police, which investigates the events of the fight. Haye, also wanted by German authorities, was not found at the hotel.
