Mousasi reveals he almost retired after injury: 'I don't want to be slowed down'

Bellator middleweight champion admitted he is thinking about hanging up his gloves in the near future

Bellator middleweight champion and considered one of the best pound-for-pound fighters today, Gegard Mousasi He almost had to abandon the sport early, at the age of 33. The Armenian-Dutch-Iranian fighter revealed that an eye problem, in October 2017, shortly after debuting with a victory over Alexander Shlemenko in the circular cage, almost prevented him from continuing his career, admitting that he became more worried about his future after the episode.

“People didn't see what happened after the fight against (Alexander) Shlemenko. I was in a hospital. I couldn't move and I didn't know if I would lose my eye or not. People didn't see that part. I didn't know if I had lost my sight, because the doctors were talking. My eye was closed. They didn't know what was wrong with my eye. So for a long time I was literally in the dark. Thank God there were no serious eye injuries. But yes, I can't fight like that. I want to make money, but I want to end up healthy. I don't want to be slowed down after three fights”, declared Gegard, in an interview with the program 'The MMA Hour'.

With just three more fights left on his Bellator contract, Mousasi admitted he is already thinking about hanging up his gloves. For him, the final decision will be made according to what happens in his next fights.

“If I keep getting victories without getting hurt, keep winning without even getting injured, of course I could have more than just three fights. But, to be honest, I will analyze what my next fights will be like, and then, to be honest, I will retire”, concluded the fighter.

Coming off a recent victory against Rory McDonald At Bellator 206, Mousasi is experiencing a magical moment in his career, with eight consecutive victories, six of which were by knockouts. Former UFC fighter, the European has a respectable resume, having already beaten names like Thiago Marreta, Thales leites, Vitor belfort, Uriah Hall, Chris Weidman, Raphael Carvalho, Mark Hunt, Ronaldo Jacare, Dan Henderson, among others. In addition to winning the Bellator belt, another notable moment in Gegard's career was becoming light heavyweight champion of the now defunct Strikeforce. In total, there are 46 positive results, six negative results and two draws as a professional.
