Former flyweight champion, Nicco Montaño would face Valentina Shevchenko in the co-main event of UFC 228. Due to problems regarding the weight cut, the American had to go to the hospital and left the card. The fighter released a statement on her social media explaining the reasons for leaving the show in Dallas on Saturday (08).

“Unfortunately the first time I didn't make weight, they took away the belt I worked so hard to get. Many other fighters were not punished for doing their worst. But since I don't open my mouth, then I don't bring the money. I stopped sweating early and my kidneys no longer worked. I had an electrolyte imbalance and very high sodium levels. When I arrived at the hospital, the doctors said it was the best idea, as if I had waited longer I could have had heart problems. I had no intention of leaving the fight and I felt good in the open training session because I had the intention of dominating,” said Montaño.

In her post, the flyweight did not fail to criticize her Kyrgyz rival. Nicco called Shevchenko a 'bully', 'liar' and 'egomaniac' for judging her abandonment of the event.

“I asked for a fight in October, but the matchmaker only gave me a date in September. I had no other choice and with the Internet supporting a bully (Valentina Shevchenko), I was forced to accept or I would have my belt revoked. This egomaniac's statements are all lies. (…) She is obsessed with me and has a lot of free time. Not only does she disrespect my efforts and be jealous of them, but she ended up blocking me on Instagram during her first flyweight fight. And as if that wasn't enough, her kicking a person when they are down, undergoing surgery and having kidney problems shows what a 'martial artist' she is,” she concluded.

In addition to having the fight cancelled, Montaño also had his title stripped by the UFC. The organization's president, Dana White, stated that the belt will be vacant momentarily, but the franchise is in the process of making a fight by the end of the year.
