The problem with cutting weight cost Nicco Montaño dearly. After being withdrawn from her first title defense against Valentina Shevchenko at UFC 228, this Saturday (08), the North American was stripped of her position as champion of the flyweight category (up to 56,7 kg.). The decision was announced by franchise president, Dana White.

“The belt will be vacant, so the title is vacant. Obviously, Shevchenko is dying to fight for this title. So, we are in the process now of trying to have another fight before the end of the year”, revealed the director, in an interview with the FOX Sports 1 channel, in the USA.

Montaño, 29, became the first champion of the flyweight division when she won The Ultimate Fighter 26 (TUF 26), the UFC reality show. She became champion in December 2017 and has not defended her reign since. The North American was chosen to face the Kyrgyzstani based in Peru Valentina Shevchenko, but the duel never took place. The champion dealt with a series of injuries that forced her to postpone her fight until UFC 228. However, hours before the official weigh-in, the fighter was hospitalized due to problems with her weight cut. Irritated by the athlete's lack of fights, Ultimate managers lost patience and removed Nicco from the position of champion.
