Daniel Cormier plans retirement in 2019

The light heavyweight champion promises to retire in March next year, but still wants to face Jon Jones and Brock Lesnar

The light heavyweight champion, Daniel Cormier focuses on the fight against Stipe Miocic for the heavyweight belt at UFC 226, July 7th. Although he did not hide that his retirement is close, 'DC' revealed in an interview with “Ariel Helwani's MMA Show” that he intends to conclude his career in 2019.

In the time reserved for professional MMA, the fighter who performs two more clashes. “I think I can get two more (fights), I can squeeze in a little more. If I fight on July 7th, I bet I can win one in November and take a month off in December, and I can squeeze one in at the beginning of March. I can still fight,” said the light heavyweight champion.

On the eve of turning 40, Cormier lists the opponents he wants to face: his biggest opponent and the only one to beat him in his career, the former UFC champion, Jon Jones; In addition to the WWE star, Brock Lesnar.

“Winning Stipe Miocic – and that all depends on the UFC, I would like, at some point, to fight Jones again and fight Brock Lesnar. These are the ideal two final fights, but things don't always work out perfectly, but I feel like this would be perfect. There will be some guys upset about this, but that's okay, they can fight each other. These are just the two biggest fights I could have, and nothing more,” said DC.

Cormier believes he can still offer more to MMA, but his decision to retire comes from the promise he made to his family. “I'm not leaving the game because I don't have the ability to compete, but it's a decision I made a long time ago and I want to keep it for my family,” he said.
