In a press conference after UFC Chile, Demian spoke about the desire that motivates him in the final stretch of his career. The black belt guarantees that the belt is no longer his main objective.
“It's not my concern. If I could, I would like to break the UFC submission record. I would definitely like it. I want to have a few more victories, but the belt is not the focus”, said Maia.
With nine victories by submission in the UFC, Demian is one triumph away from equaling the mark of 10 submissions of Royce gracie. With three fights under contract, Maia would need two submissions to break the mark established in 1994 by Gracie.
To try to break Royce's record, Demian will need to find his way back to victory. After fighting for the welterweight belt in 2017, the Brazilian's form is not good and he has accumulated three defeats in a row.
