Initially, the featherweight title would be contested between Frankie Edgar e Max Holloway during UFC 222 in March. The fight was postponed as Holloway suffered an injury and was replaced by Brian ortega. Edgar was knocked out in the first round. With the defeat, Edgar lost the chance to fight for the belt. At UFC 226, in Las Vegas during the July 7th holiday, Ortega will fight for the featherweight champion title with Holloway.

Seeking recovery, Frankie faced Cub swanson in April and won by unanimous decision. With the good performance, UFC president Dana White confirmed on his podcast that Edgar is the next challenger for the belt, but he could also be called up if Holloway or Ortega had to leave UFC 226.
“If you look at Frankie Edgar now, the guy is ranked third in the world. It's still there, and you know how that goes in this business. Ortega is next (challenger), but imagine if something happens to these guys and Frankie gets in shape, he could dive in there for a title shot. You never know what’s going to happen,” White said.
Frankie Edgar The 36-year-old is a former UFC lightweight champion and has been in MMA since 2005. He has a record of 29 fights, with 22 wins and six losses.
