Canelo Alvarez receives six-month suspension for doping case

Fighter tested positive for the substance Clenbuterol and will be able to return to action in August 2018

The fighter escaped a heavier hook and was suspended for six months by the organization. The fighter had been caught, in February, with the substance Clenbuterol, used in medicines for people with respiratory problems. However, the same drug is prohibited, as it helps athletes lose weight.

At the hearing, held in Las Vegas, the NAC announced the short sentence arrived after the agreement between the fighter's lawyers and Bob Bennett, executive director of the commission. The defense denied that Alvarez knowingly ingested Clenbuterol and that the change in the test was due to contamination of meat from Mexico. According to the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA), meat contamination actually happens on Mexican soil. As a result, the athlete was suspended for just 180 days. In addition to the suspension, the fighter will have to undergo drug testing before his next fight in Nevada. Canelo Álvarez is the current World Boxing Organization light middleweight champion. In his last fight he drew precisely with Gennady Golovkin and kept his belt.
