Nick Diaz breaks the record for most strikes in a UFC fight

Nick Diaz made history at UFC 137. In addition to winning B.J. Penn – and perhaps retire – an MMA legend, Cesar Gracie's pupil set a new mark: the number of most significant blows landed in a UFC fight.

The FightMetric website, specialized in MMA fight statistics, counted 178 significant blows landed by Diaz in B.J. Penn. The Californian surpassed the previous record by 4 blows, which had been set exactly one event before, at UFC 136, by Nam Phan in his victory over Leonard Garcia.

Diaz's dominant performance in the last two rounds last Saturday was decisive in breaking the record. While he only landed 20 significant strikes in the first round, got 83 in the second and 75 in the third.

Despite the defeat, B.J. Penn also left the Octagon in Las Vegas with an established record. He now holds the record for most significant strikes landed in a UFC career. The previous owner of this record was Chris Lytle, who retired at UFC Live 5 in August 2011.
