Tony Ferguson left the fight against Khabib Nurmagomedov at UFC 223, for the lightweight belt, due to a bizarre injury with less than a week to go before the show. The fighter tripped in a studio while attending the press last Friday (30) and ruptured his knee ligament. Visibly frustrated with the injury, which postponed his fight against the Russian for the fourth time, the interim lightweight champion commented on the entire situation. “El Cucuy”, as he is known, did not hide his frustration, but promised to return to the Octagon as soon as he recovers.

“Words cannot describe how much it hurts, how frustrated, furious and in disbelief I am right now. While I was doing my press duties on Friday, I had an accident in the studio, tearing a ligament in my knee. My doctor and the UFC doctors said I couldn't fight, and one of them said I need surgery. I will go to a specialist to make the final determination so that I can rehabilitate myself and return to defend my belt as quickly as possible. I want to apologize to the fans, the UFC, Khabib, my training partners, coaches, friends and, most importantly, my family. Happy Easter everyone. There are evils that come for good in this real-life nightmare. It’s not April Fools’ Day,” he wrote on his Twitter account.

With Ferguson's departure, Ultimate acted quickly and called up the featherweight champion, Max Holloway to face Khabib Nurmagomedov for the organization's lightweight belt in the main fight of UFC 223. The show, which takes place next Saturday, April 7, in New York, features another title fight. The Straw Champion Rose namajunas defends his reign against the former champion Joanna Jedrzejczyk.
