In 2017, Kelvin Gastelum fought three former middleweight champions, winning Vitor belfort in Fortaleza (in a fight that eventually ended without result), losing to Chris Weidman in the United States, and closing the year with a spectacular knockout over Michael Bisping, at UFC China at the end of last month.

After his fight with Belfort in Fortaleza, Gastelum was caught in a doping test for using marijuana during competition and his victory against the Brazilian was turned into a No Contest (no result). Much loved by Brazilian fans, Kelvin admitted that he no longer wanted to fight in Brazil as he believes he was treated unfairly in the case by the STJDMMA (Superior Court of Sports Justice for MMA).
