The devastating victory of Max Holloway about José Aldo in no way diminished the legacy of the former Brazilian champion. The guarantor is Holloway himself, who paid extensive tributes to his rival after the second meeting between the two, held at UFC 218 last Saturday. According to the Hawaiian, Brazilians should erect a statue of Aldo, in honor of everything the fighter did for the sport in the country.

In a press conference after another triumph over the Brazilian, Holloway revealed that he intends to reach the number of belt defenses of Aldo, who defended his featherweight title seven times in total.

“I heard that Aldo’s motivation for this fight was his daughter. I'm a father and I understand. But he doesn't need to prove anything to anyone. This guy is one of the greatest of all time. There should be statues for this guy in Brazil. He's the greatest of all time, a legend, and I still have a long way to go. He has seven or eight title defenses. There's a long way to go before I reach it. Numbers don't lie. Men and women lie, but numbers don't. I have a lot of respect for him, for his family, his team and for Brazil, but I'm going after his record”, assured Holloway, who promised to prioritize defending his title over so-called fights for money.

“Defending their belts is what champions do. People say you're not a champion until you defend your belt. I want to bring stability to the featherweights. It took me ten fights to get to the interim belt, and eleven to get to the linear belt. I don't want anyone to go through this. I want to do like Demetrious Johnson (at flyweight): they arrive, hit me head on and go back to the end of the line. "Good try. Keep it up…". Today I am focused on living the life of a champion. I want to be the featherweight champion for a long time, and see my name everywhere. After a long time, I'm thinking about doing exhibition fights to earn some more money”, he promised.
