After his victory over the former champion John hendricks at UFC 217, Paulo borrachinha entered the top-15 of the middleweight division and attracted a lot of attention. Former training partner of “Eraser”, Cezar Mutant took advantage of his victory over Nate Marquardt a week later at UFC Norfolk, to challenge his compatriot, saying that he had been ungrateful towards Vitor belfort, among other more serious accusations and insults. However, Borrachinha ignored his former friend's challenge and ensured he focused on a top-10 opponent.

Through his social networks, the middleweight issued a statement and warned that he does not intend to fight “expressionless” athletes, making a veiled reference to Mutante, who does not currently occupy any position in the rankings. Borrachinha also revealed that he is close to completing his next challenge.

“About my next fight. We are well advanced in defining a TOP 10 opponent in the rankings. Of course, always aiming for the belt. There is NO possibility of fighting against expressionless fighters, fighting to not be fired or who give discouraging performances. This next opponent should be a big name in the rankings that will be revealed soon, someone who is truly worth fighting for and representing my country and all Brazilians. Thank you for your enormous support,” said the Brazilian’s statement.

Despite only signing with the UFC this year, Borrachinha impressed with three wins in three fights. Furthermore, the Brazilian won all of his victories by knockout, going over Garreth McLellan in the first round, and Oluwale Bamgbose and John hendricks, both in the second round. Mutante, in turn, recovered from the setback to Elias Theodorou with a victory over Nate Marquardt, former Strikeforce welterweight champion.
