Chosen to face again José Aldo after beating him at UFC 212, Max Holloway criticized the former champion's stance after the duel. When losing his featherweight belt to the Hawaiian, the Brazilian admitted that he felt an injury during training, but did not leave the fight so as not to disappoint the fans and Ultimate. The two will rematch at UFC 218 on December 2nd.

According to “Blessed”, who would make his first title defense against Frankie Edgar, before the former lightweight champion got injured and gave way to Aldo, the Brazilian's stance was “cowardly”.

“That was a little cowardly for me, to say something like that and take away someone's victory. I've never taken away someone's victory. I just thought it was stupid. I hope he doesn't have an injury this time, and I hope he shoots more. In fact, don't shoot – the guy was dead tired in the second round. His mouth was open. I managed to provoke him, I threw a punch, and from then on I knew, “Wow, this guy's not really moving anymore.” This was the moment to increase the pressure, and that's what I did”, commented the champion, in an interview with the website of the North American broadcaster ESPN, denying the notion that he had been losing the first meeting before knocking out Aldo.

“In our first fight, I don't know what people were watching, but some said I was losing until I knocked him out in the third round. They must be some Aldo fans. But he's been one of the best for years, so to show that I'm the best in back-to-back fights, I signed the rematch,” he concluded.
