Ronys ready to face Drew Fickett in the AFC

The city of Manaus is preparing to host an edition of the UFC in 2012, but while the largest MMA organization in the world does not arrive in the city, another respectable event arrives in the capital of Amazonas.

Amazon Forest Combat (AFC) features international fighters, cutting-edge structure and distinguished guests such as Anderson Silva e Lyoto Machida. Among the national representatives, Ronys Torress stands out, facing the American Drew Fickett in search of his eighth consecutive victory.

“I'm in a very strong fighting rhythm, with a good head and well prepared. I feel like I'm coming off the best phase of my career. Now the biggest challenge is to make weight and go to war”, commented the athlete. “I've been studying him (Fickett) for a while. We have a similar game, as he also likes the ground a lot. I think it will end up being a jiu-jitsu versus jiu-jitsu duel, because, even though he's a wrestler, he likes to submit. He’s a tough guy and very experienced, but he’s going to face a guy full of desire.”

Fighting rhythm is what the Brazilian doesn't lack, and he hasn't stopped this year. His last victory was the triumph over Akbarh Arreola in the “Fighting for BOPE” Shooto, in August, in Rio de Janeiro. Born in Manacapuru, Amazonas, Ronys celebrates the opportunity to fight in familiar territory.

“I really enjoy fighting in Amazonas and seeing the fans on my side. I live in Rio and I've fought abroad, and I often have that feeling of 'against' fans”, comments Torres. “Fighting in Manaus gives a greater sense of seeking victory and giving one’s life in the fight. The responsibility of fighting 'at home' is much greater.”

Both Ficket and Torres have already fought in the UFC. Of the four fights foreseen by contract in the organization, however, Ronys only had two, with negative results. His return, according to the fighter, would depend on four consecutive victories outside the event. So far, there have been seven. For Ronys, however, this next fight could seal his return. With a UFC event in Manaus imminent, his dream has never seemed so close.

“Fighting in a UFC in Manaus would be a dream come true. If the UFC holds an event there, I imagine it will look for Amazonian athletes, which only increases my chances”, said Ronys. “If I win this fight and return to the UFC, great. If not, I'm happy too. I want to keep putting in the work, winning, and wait for the right time for things. My life is in God’s hands,” he concluded.
