Without fighting since August 2016, Carlos Condit recently had his return scheduled for UFC 219, December 30th, when he will face Neil Magny. However, his return to the octagon was uncertain, as the fighter himself considered the possibility of hanging up his gloves. Honestly, the former welterweight champion admitted that, although he still loves fighting, the financial factor was one of the main factors in ruling out retirement.

“Honestly, I didn’t know (if I would fight again). I reflected a lot, I did some sporadic training at the gym to assess how I was compared to other competitors. For a long time, I didn't know what my future in sport would be. (…) Many factors contributed to my decision to return. I still love fighting, I love training, I love the whole process and my teammates. And, honestly, there is a financial aspect too. This is what I know how to do, I didn't go to college. I don’t have many options in my plan B. I need to feed my family and pay my bills”, he declared, in an interview with the program ‘The MMa Hour’.

Having not stepped foot in the octagon for 24 months, Condit admits that his inactive time is largely due to the defeat he suffered against Demian Maia, when it was finished in less than two minutes. For him, the setback was a huge blow, especially given the quick way it happened.

“In fact, I was very disappointed at the time, literally feeling low. I'm a competitive guy and I felt really bad after the loss to Demian. In other defeats I had in the UFC, I went there, fought and put on a good show. But in that fight I couldn’t do that,” he concluded.

Interim champion of the under-77kg division in 2012, Condit, 33 years old, is not going through a good phase, having lost three of his last four fights, including a fight for the welterweight belt against the former champion Robbie Lawler. His last triumph was in May 2015, when he knocked out the Brazilian Thiago Pitbull at UFC Goiânia. In Ultimate since 2009, he has seven wins and six losses in the organization.
