In March of this year, Mauricio Shogun was completely dominated by the North American Jon Jones and lost the UFC light heavyweight belt. For many experts, the defeat left the Brazilian far from a new fight for the title, but that is not how Dana White thinks. The organization's president announced, this Tuesday, during the UFC Rio press conference, that Shogun is two wins away from returning to compete for the position of champion in the light heavyweight category.

“I have no doubt that Shogun is one of the best fighters in the world, but he is still two fights behind (the title fight),” he said. White “In boxing you have immediate rematches when you lose a belt, but here (in the UFC) we have a lot of good guys working hard to be in title contention”, explained the top hat.

The first opportunity to resume his quest for the Shogun belt will be at UFC Rio, an event that takes place on August 27th, in the capital of Rio. The Brazilian's opponent will be the North American Forrest griffin, who defeated Mauricio in 2007, when the Tupiniquim athlete was making his UFC debut.

“We are always sad about defeats, but it is something we learn to deal with. Forrest is a very good fighter and we have similar styles, trying to finish the fight. We both evolved a lot after that fight”, praised Shogun, who revealed that he was looking forward to this fight. “I knew I could meet him again and I try not to focus on the pressure, just on the good things about fighting in Brazil. I am very proud to be part of this event”, concluded the Brazilian.
