the american Kevin Lee arrives at UFC 216 this Saturday (7) with the chance to become interim lightweight champion when he faces Tony Ferguson in the main event of the event. For the challenger, however, the provisional title at stake is actually the linear one. Lee explains his reasoning by saying that the current champion, Conor McGregor, is not in a good phase and “has lost three of the last four fights”.

For Lee, the Irishman lost the rematch against Nate diaz, at UFC 202, in addition to the defeats to his rival in the first fight and against Floyd Mayweather in boxing. The “Motown Phenom” explained to North American journalists at the UFC 216 launch conference that McGregor needs to prove that he wants to return to fighting in MMA before being considered a “challenger”.

“I think the fight with Ferguson is for the straight title, really. People talk about Conor McGregor to be the champion but, for me, he needs to prove that he is ready to fight. In my opinion, this guy lost three of his last four fights. I don't even think he won Nate diaz for the second time. I like a big challenge and he needs to show me more. He's small, too. It's a featherweight. He was losing in wrestling to a 40-year-old boxer. Mayweather was beating him in the clinch. I really think he needs to show more,” said Lee, who also left the possibility of fighting McGregor or not up in the air.

"Perhaps. After this fight, maybe I'll let him fight me, give him a title shot. Maybe I do not know. Let's see how he will react. All of a sudden, he should fight Nate again and prove that he can fight me,” he signed off.
