Aldo and Lamas are old acquaintances. When he was still champion, “Scarface” faced “Bully” in the co-main fight of UFC 169, in New Jersey, winning by unanimous decision in a duel that he dominated from start to finish. After the fight, the Brazilian was praised for his control over Lamas, but criticized for not setting a better pace and achieving a knockout over his opponent.
Aldo hasn't fought since June 3, when he was knocked out in the third round by Holloway in the main fight of UFC 212, in Rio de Janeiro. It was the first that the Brazilian lost at home for Ultimate and only his second defeat in the promotion – he had also been knocked out by Conor McGregor at UFC 194. Before the setback for the current champion, Aldo had bounced back from his loss to the “Notorious” with a dominant triumph over Frankie Edgar at UFC 200.
Lamas, on the other hand, comes from two consecutive victories, having defeated the Brazilian Charles Oliveira, by submission, and the American Jason Knight, by knockout. “Bully” had been alternating victories and defeats before the current sequence, losing, in addition to Aldo, to Chad Mendes and also for Max Holloway.
