The Nevada Athletic Commission approved, this Wednesday, a small but fundamental change in the superfight between Floyd Mayweather and Conor McGregor, which will take place on August 26th: the size of the gloves the two will wear has been reduced, from 10 to eight ounces. The new size could benefit the Irishman, who will have gloves closer to the four-ounce ones used in MMA.

Typically, eight-ounce gloves are only approved for duels up to welterweight in boxing (66,6 kg.). This is because the power of the blows given by lighter fighters is lower. However, the organization made an exception for Mayweather x McGregor, which will take place in the super welterweight category (69,8 kg.), where 10-ounce gloves, in theory, are the lightest to be used.
Only one of the representatives of the Athletic Commission voted against the change, claiming that because it was an MMA fighter against a boxer, the duel should not involve any “experiment”. The rest voted in favor of reducing the size of gloves. The superfight referee was also decided at the same meeting: Robert Byrd will be the third man in the ring with Conor and Floyd. The side judges, who will score the fight round by round, will be Burt Clements, Dave Moretti and Guido Cavalleri.
