Mir was one of the UFC's biggest names in the last decade, winning the heavyweight title on two occasions. First, in 2004, when he submitted the then champion Tim Sylvia with an armbar. After suffering a serious motorcycle accident, he lost his belt due to inactivity, and returned with mixed results. However, Mir managed to regain the title, on an interim basis, by becoming the first fighter to knock out Rodrigo Minotauro, at UFC 92. A few months later, at the historic UFC 100, he lost the unification duel with Brock Lesnar and then returned to alternating victories and defeats.
